How to maintain a dive watch?

How to maintain a dive watch?

Unlike casual watches, a dive watch is always exposed to underwater ventures. Although they are already designed to be more robust than the standard timepieces, proper maintenance of dive watches will make them function in its optimal state.

Here are some essential maintenance tips to make your watch last longer.

Regular Cleaning

It is best to clean the watch to remove dirt. You can clean the external parts by wiping them with a moist, microfiber cloth or using a soft toothbrush and mild detergent. Avoid using a brush with hard bristles as it can scratch the glass and steel case.

Also, give it a freshwater bath after a dip in the sea to remove saltwater. It is a safe way to prevent corrosion (even if it is designed to resist it). If internal cleaning is needed, take it to an authorized watch shop to avoid damage.

Avoid Heat and Magnetism

Some watches have components that can be affected by extreme heat and magnetism. As a precaution, it is recommended not to expose the timepiece to any intense heat or strong magnetic fields to prevent the watch from malfunctioning.

Screw Down the Crown

In dive watches, the crown is not just for setting the time. It is also used as a seal to prevent water from entering. Remember to always screw it down before jumping into the water.

Understand the Resistance

Under ISO 6425, watches with the resistance of at least 100 meters are already ideal for diving. Always check the watch’s water resistance before diving to prevent any damage to the timepiece.

Watch Servicing is Important

Watches can last for years, but only when you take good care of it. Include in your checklist routine service checks every year or two. It is to check the overall condition and determine if gaskets or battery (for quartz) replacement is needed, or if the rotor needs oil (for automatics).
